Sri Lanka: Prime Minister apologises for torching the Jaffna Library

( December 7, 2016, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Prime Minister apologised for setting fire to Jaffna Library. Speaking in Parliament yesterday (6th) Prime Minister and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said Jaffna Public Library was torched when the UNP was in power and he, on behalf of the then UNP government, apologises for setting fire to the Library.

He said just as he apologises for setting fire to the library during the term of the UNP government he would ask the Members of the Joint Opposition to apologise for the acts committed when they were in power.

Political analysts say both UNP and UPFA have committed crimes against the people and the country and they would not be able to settle matters with mere apologies.

The burning of the Jaffna Public Library was an important event in the Sri Lankan civil war. An organized mob of Sinhalese origin went on a rampage on the night of June 1, 1981, burning the library. It was one of the most violent examples of ethnic biblioclasms of the 20th century.Term At the time of its destruction, the library was one of the biggest in Asia, containing over 97,000 books and manuscripts.

  1. It was not a proper heartfelt apology, but a passing remark in an angry mood to keep the opposition’s mouth shut. It took not even two seconds. When is he going to come out with a proper apology.?
